YOUR PROP FIRM ACCOUNT GOT RESTRICTED: NOW WHAT?
You log in and see a restriction notice. Panic hits. But before you spiral, understand: restrictions aren't always permanent, and how you respond matters.
Here's what to do.
Why Accounts Get Restricted
Rule violations: Exceeding position limits. Trading during prohibited times. Hitting drawdown limits. Holding positions over weekends when not allowed. These trigger automatic restrictions.
Risk flags: Unusual trading patterns. Large unexpected trades. Activity that looks like it might be problematic even if it's technically allowed.
Documentation issues: Expired ID. Incomplete verification. Address changes that weren't updated. Administrative stuff that has nothing to do with your trading.
Knowing the cause determines your response.
Step 1: Read the Notification Carefully
The restriction notice usually explains why. Don't skim, read every word. Look for:
What specific rule was violated (if any). What action is required from you. What the timeline is. Whether the restriction is temporary or potentially permanent.
If anything is unclear, contact support before doing anything else.
Step 2: Contact Support Immediately
Don't assume you know what happened. Don't argue about whether you did anything wrong. Just ask for clarification.
Questions to ask: What specifically triggered this restriction? What do I need to do to resolve it? What's the process and timeline for reinstatement?
Be professional. Support staff aren't your enemies, they're your path to resolution. Angry emails don't speed things up.
Step 3: Gather Documentation
If you believe the restriction was an error, prepare evidence.
Trade logs showing your actual activity. Screenshots of your positions. Records that demonstrate you followed the rules.
If documentation is the issue, gather whatever they need, updated ID, address verification, whatever's required.
How to Prevent Future Restrictions
Know the rules cold. Before trading, understand every restriction, limit, and requirement. Don't assume, read the documentation.
Build in margins. If daily drawdown is 5%, treat your internal limit as 3%. Never get close to the official limits.
Keep records. Document everything. If a question ever arises about what you did and why, records protect you.
Stay in communication. If you're doing something unusual, larger than normal position, extended holding period, different strategy, consider informing the firm proactively.
If the Restriction Stands
Sometimes restrictions are permanent. You violated a rule and the consequence is losing the account.
If that happens: learn from it. What rule did you break? Why did you break it? How will you prevent it next time?
Most firms let you take another evaluation. The mistake cost you this account, don't let it cost you your entire trading career. Take the lesson and apply it going forward.
