HOW TO TRADE AROUND NEWS EVENTS (WITHOUT GETTING DESTROYED)

News moves markets. A single employment report can push a currency pair 100 pips in seconds. Central bank decisions can reverse trends that have been building for months.

Some traders love news events. Others avoid them entirely. Here's how to figure out which camp you belong in.

What Actually Moves Markets

Economic data releases: Non-farm payrolls, GDP, inflation numbers, employment reports. These come out on scheduled dates. The market reacts based on whether the numbers are better or worse than expected.

Central bank announcements: Interest rate decisions from the Fed, ECB, Bank of England, and others. Rate hikes typically strengthen a currency. Rate cuts weaken it. But the market also reacts to forward guidance, what the bank says about future policy.

Political events: Elections, trade negotiations, geopolitical tensions. These are less predictable but can cause massive moves when they surprise the market.

The Problem With News Trading

Here's why many traders avoid it: the volatility is brutal and the spreads blow out.

In the seconds before and after major releases, spreads can widen dramatically. That tight 1-pip spread on EUR/USD might become 10 pips. Your stop loss could get filled way worse than expected.

The market also moves in both directions before settling on a trend. A news release might spike price up 50 pips, then reverse and drop 80 pips, then reverse again. If you entered on the first move, you got stopped out before the "real" move happened.

Three Approaches That Work

Approach 1: Stay out entirely. Close positions before major releases. Don't trade for 30-60 minutes after. Let the market settle, then look for clean setups based on the new information. This is the safest approach.

Approach 2: Trade the reaction, not the release. Don't try to predict what the numbers will be. Wait for the news to come out, let the initial chaos settle, then trade in the direction the market chooses. This typically means waiting 5-15 minutes after the release.

Approach 3: Straddle the event. Place orders on both sides before the release. One gets triggered by the initial move, the other gets cancelled. This requires careful position sizing since you're essentially betting on volatility regardless of direction.

Know the Calendar

There's no excuse for being surprised by scheduled news events. Economic calendars are free and widely available.

Check the calendar before every trading session. Know what's coming out, when, and which pairs it affects. If you're in a position, decide in advance whether you'll hold through the release or close before it.

High-impact events deserve extra caution. Medium-impact events can usually be traded through with wider stops. Low-impact events rarely move markets meaningfully.

Risk Management During News

If you're going to trade around news events:

Size down. Use half your normal position size or less.

Widen stops. Tight stops get hit by the noise before the real move develops.

Accept slippage. Your fill might not be where you expected. Factor that into your risk.

Have a plan. Don't just "see what happens." Know exactly what you'll do if the price goes up, goes down, or chops around.

News events can create great opportunities. They can also destroy accounts in minutes. The difference is preparation.
