HOW MUCH MONEY CAN YOU MAKE PROP TRADING? (REAL NUMBERS)

Everyone wants to know the number. How much can I actually make?

The honest answer is: it depends. But "it depends" is useless, so let me give you the actual maths with real numbers, real profit splits, and real scenarios you can map to your own situation.

No inflated promises. No "six figures your first month" nonsense. Just arithmetic that shows you what's actually possible at different performance levels.

The three variables that determine your income

Your prop trading income comes down to exactly three things:

1. Account size. A 5% return on $25,000 is $1,250. A 5% return on $200,000 is $10,000. Same skill level. Different paycheques. This is the biggest lever you have.

2. Monthly return percentage. Consistent traders average somewhere between 3% and 10% monthly. Where you land on that spectrum depends on your strategy, risk tolerance, and how long you've been at this.

3. Profit split. The percentage of profits you keep. At SFX Funded, this ranges from 85% up to 100% . A higher split means more of your gains end up in your pocket.

Let's run the numbers.

The maths at different account sizes

I'm going to use a conservative 5% monthly return for these examples. Some traders do better. Some do worse. Five percent is a realistic average for a competent trader who's managing risk properly.

$25,000 account with 80% profit split:

Not life-changing. But it's $12,000 you earned without risking any of your own capital beyond the evaluation fee. For someone with a full-time job, that's a solid second income.

$100,000 account with 80% profit split:

Now we're talking. That's a full income in many countries. And you still haven't risked your own capital.

$200,000 account with 80% profit split:

Close to six figures. From trading someone else's money.

$400,000 account with 90% profit split:

That's a top-tier income in most parts of the world. And with at SFX Funded, you can scale up to $3.2 million in funding and keep 100% of profits. At that level, even a 2% monthly return generates serious income.

What about higher returns?

Five percent monthly is conservative for a skilled trader. What if you're pulling 8% or 10%?

On a $100,000 account at 8% monthly with 80% split, you're taking home $6,400 per month. That's $76,800 annually.

On a $200,000 account at 10% monthly with 90% split, you're looking at $18,000 per month. $216,000 annually.

These aren't fantasy numbers. They're just multiplication. The hard part isn't the maths. It's generating those returns consistently, month after month, without blowing your drawdown limits.

Prop trading vs retail trading income

Here's where prop trading pulls ahead.

Let's say you're a good trader. Consistent. Disciplined. You pull 5% monthly returns like clockwork. The only question is: what's your account size?

Most retail traders start with $1,000 to $5,000. Let's be generous and say $5,000.

5% of $5,000 = $250 per month. Before taxes. After commissions and spreads.

The same trader with a $100,000 funded account? $4,000 per month after profit split.

Same skill. Same strategy. Same risk management. Sixteen times the income.

This is why prop trading exists. It's not about making traders better. It's about giving good traders the capital their skills deserve. If you can generate consistent returns, the only thing holding you back is account size. Prop firms remove that bottleneck.

The compounding effect (the part most people miss)

Here's what gets me excited about prop trading income: it doesn't have to stay flat.

At SFX Funded, you can scale your account. Start with $50,000. Prove you're consistent. Scale to $100,000. Keep proving it. Scale to $200,000. Then $400,000. All the way to $3.2 million through account scaling.

Your income doesn't grow linearly. It grows with your account size.

Month 1-3 on $50,000: earning $2,000/month (at 5%, 80% split)

Month 4-6 on $100,000: earning $4,000/month

Month 7-12 on $200,000: earning $8,000/month

Year 2 on $400,000: earning $18,000/month (at 5%, 90% split)

That's not compounding in the traditional investment sense. It's better. You're compounding your earning power by demonstrating consistency and getting access to more capital.

A retail trader trying to grow a $5,000 account to $400,000 through compounding would need years, probably decades, assuming they never withdraw. A funded trader can get there in 12-18 months by simply being consistent.

What do real funded traders earn?

Let me give you some realistic profiles based on what I've seen across the industry.

The Part-Timer: Has a day job. Trades 1-2 hours per day, usually the London or New York session. Swing trading style. $50,000 account. Makes 3-5% monthly. Takes home $1,200-$2,000/month after split. Annual supplement: $14,000-$24,000. Treats it as a solid side income while building skills.

The Full-Timer: Trading is the job. 4-6 hours per day across London and New York sessions. Day trading or intraday swing. $100,000-$200,000 account. Makes 5-8% monthly. Takes home $4,000-$12,800/month. Annual: $48,000-$153,600. This person is earning a professional salary from trading.

The Veteran: Years of experience. Multiple funded accounts across different firms. Trades selectively. $200,000-$400,000 total funding. Makes 4-6% monthly with very low drawdowns. Takes home $7,200-$21,600/month across accounts. Annual: $86,400-$259,200. This is where trading starts building real wealth.

Notice something? Even the part-timer is earning more than most retail traders with $20,000 accounts. The access to capital makes all the difference.

Where you live changes everything

Here's something that doesn't get discussed enough: where you live changes what these numbers mean.

$4,000 per month in New York or London? You're getting by. It's supplemental income at best. Same $4,000 per month in Thailand, Portugal, Colombia, or Malaysia? You're living comfortably. Nice apartment, eating out regularly, saving money.

Prop trading doesn't require you to live anywhere specific. You need a laptop, internet, and a quiet space. That's it. No commute. No office. No dress code. SFX Funded has traders in 130+ countries, and a significant number of them have structured their lives around this advantage.

A trader making $6,000 per month from a $100,000 account can live extremely well in dozens of countries where the cost of living is a fraction of what it costs in Western cities. The maths gets even more interesting when you factor in jurisdictions with favourable tax treatment for trading income.

Dubai, for instance, has zero personal income tax. SFX Funded is headquartered there, and plenty of full-time prop traders relocate to the UAE or similar tax-efficient jurisdictions. That $6,000 per month stays as $6,000 rather than becoming $4,200 after tax.

I'm not giving tax advice. Talk to an accountant in your country. But when you're planning your prop trading income, don't forget that where you earn it and where you spend it are variables you control.

The months you don't make money

Let me be real about something nobody on social media talks about.

You won't make money every month. Nobody does. Not consistently profitable traders. Not hedge fund managers. Not anyone.

A realistic funded trading year might look like this: 8 profitable months, 3 breakeven months, 1 losing month. Your annual income comes from those 8 profitable months minus the 1 losing month. The breakeven months are just you staying disciplined and waiting for better conditions.

If your average profitable month nets $4,000 and your average losing month costs $2,000, your annual income is roughly ($4,000 x 8) - ($2,000 x 1) = $30,000.

Not $48,000 like the clean maths would suggest. Reality includes flat periods, drawdowns, and months where the market just doesn't cooperate with your strategy.

Plan for this. Budget for this. Don't assume every month will be your best month.

SFX Funded profit splits explained

Not all profit splits are equal, and understanding the structure affects your real take-home pay.

At SFX Funded, here's how it breaks down across programs:

And here's the part that matters: your challenge fee is 100% refundable on your first payout. So the only real cost of getting started is time. If you pass and trade profitably, that evaluation fee comes back to you.

With payouts averaging under 8 hours at SFX Funded, you're not waiting weeks to access your profits either. You earn it, you request it, you get it. That speed matters when trading is your income.

Can you make a living from this?

Yes. But with conditions.

You need a funded account of at least $100,000 to generate anything resembling a liveable income from 5% monthly returns. Below that, you're in side-income territory.

You need 6-12 months of consistent profitability before you should consider trading as your only income source. One good month doesn't make a career. Twelve good months starts to.

You need savings. At least 3-6 months of living expenses in the bank before you quit your job. This covers the inevitable rough patches where your trading income dips.

And you need realistic expectations. Prop trading can absolutely replace a traditional salary. For some traders, it exceeds it significantly. But it takes time to get there, and the income isn't as predictable as a fortnightly payslip.

The bottom line

Prop trading income is real. It's not a scam. It's not too good to be true. It's maths.

Account size times monthly return times profit split equals your take-home. The only variable that requires skill is the monthly return. Everything else is just choosing the right program and scaling up as you prove yourself.

Start wherever you can afford. Prove your consistency. Scale. Repeat.

The traders earning $10,000+ per month from prop firms didn't start there. They started with a $25,000 or $50,000 account, traded it well, and worked their way up. That path is open to anyone with the skills and discipline to walk it.

Do the maths with your own numbers. Pick an account size, assume a conservative 3-5% monthly return, apply the profit split. If that number excites you, it might be time to get funded.
