HOW TO ACTUALLY USE DEMO ACCOUNTS (WITHOUT WASTING YOUR TIME)
Demo accounts get a bad reputation. "It's not real money, so it doesn't count." That's true and false. Demo can be incredibly useful for specific purposes, and completely useless for others.
Here's how to use demo accounts productively.
What Demo Accounts Are Good For
Learning your platform: Before you risk real money, you should know where everything is. How to place orders quickly. How to set stops. How to close positions. Make your mistakes on demo, not when money's on the line.
Testing new strategies: Got an idea for a setup? Test it on demo first. See if it works over 50+ trades before committing real capital. This costs you nothing except time.
Building initial confidence: If you've never traded before, demo lets you experience the market without the financial consequences. See how price moves. Learn what volatility feels like. Get comfortable with the basics.
Practice after a break: Returning to trading after months away? Demo for a week or two to shake off the rust before going live again.
What Demo Accounts Can't Teach You
Emotional control: This is the big one. When there's no real money at stake, you don't feel the fear or greed that causes bad decisions. You'll trade more aggressively on demo because losing doesn't hurt.
Proper position sizing discipline: On demo, you might risk 10% per trade because it's fake money. That habit will destroy a real account.
Slippage and execution realities: Demo fills are often perfect. Real markets have slippage, especially around news or in fast-moving conditions. Demo doesn't prepare you for that.
How to Use Demo Productively
Trade it like real money. Use the same position sizes you'd use with real capital. Follow the same rules. If you wouldn't risk 10% on a live account, don't risk 10% on demo.
Keep a journal. Track every trade. Note why you entered, where your stop was, what happened. Review weekly. The data you collect on demo informs your live trading.
Set a time limit. Demo forever accomplishes nothing. Set a goal: "I'll demo for two months, then evaluate my results." If you're consistently profitable and following your rules, it's time to go live.
Use realistic capital. If you plan to trade a $10,000 account, demo with $10,000, not $100,000. The numbers need to feel realistic for the practice to transfer.
The Transition to Live
Demo success doesn't guarantee live success. The psychology changes when real money is involved. Expect your first few weeks of live trading to feel different.
Start with smaller size than you used on demo. Get comfortable with the emotional reality first. Once you can execute live trades with the same discipline you had on demo, scale up gradually.
Demo is a tool, not a destination. Use it to prepare, then move on. The real learning happens when the money's real.
